He attended the Metropolitan School of Art, Dublin (1891-7), and the Slade School of Art, London (1897-9), there winning the composition prize of 1899 with The Play Scene from Hamlet (Houghton Hall, Norfolk). He became a friend of Augustus John and joined the New English Art Club. From very early years he had been an impassioned student of the Old Masters, and he went to Paris with John in 1899 to see Leonardo da Vinci Mona Lisa (Paris, Louvre). Dutch Baroque Era Painter, 1599-1678 Dutch painter and poet. Frans Hals was once thought to have been his teacher, but there is no evidence for this. It is possible that Codde studied with a portrait painter, perhaps Barent van Someren (1572/3-1632) or Cornelis van der Voort (1576-1624), since most of his earliest works, from the period 1623-7, seem to be portraits. His earliest known dated work is the Portrait of a Young Man (1626; Oxford, Ashmolean), which precedes by a year his earliest dated genre piece, the Dancing Lesson (1627; Paris, Louvre). Italian Gothic Era Painter, active 1215-1242 Italian painter. Originally from Lucca, he was the most gifted of a family of Lombardian painters. His Scenes from the Life of St. Francis on the predella of the altar of San Francesco (Pescia) is the earliest known visual representation of St. Francis' life. Also noted are Scenes from the Life of St. Francis (Santa Croce, Florence) and St. Francis Receiving the Stigmata (Accademia, Florence).
